Vladimir Ampov, known by his artistic pseudonym Grafa, is a famous Bulgarian pop singer, composer and music producer. His wife Maria Ampov contacted us about the acoustics of his home studio. After an inspection, we found that the studio is located in a residential building on the first floor, with his child's bedroom directly above the studio. The challenge was to soundproof the room so that no sound could reach the upstairs. Before the work started and the quote was drawn up, we took sound level measurements to find out how loud the sound was reaching the child's room and into the entrance of the block. We realised that the main problem and weak point was the doors and windows. The insulation of the ceiling and walls could not be assessed, precisely because of the doors and windows.
We proposed to install double glazing on the windows and put a second door. The tricky part was that the window frames and the second door had to be the same as the old door so as not to disturb the look of the building. After the door was installed the windows were retested and it was clear that the noise coming out of the room was less than before. The client wished to reduce the sound even further and we started soundproofing the walls and ceiling so that we could provide peace of mind for Graf's music rehearsals.
After the ceiling was constructed, the measurement results showed an improvement in sound insulation. Tests made with and without sound absorption found an obvious difference. The loudest sound is currently heard through the walls in the upper room, which are hollow in places. To achieve the best result at these high levels, more needs to be done. Such as a blocking system with gypsum board, membrane and wool in addition with sound absorption on the walls.
