Terminal 2 and Sofia Airport had developed a conceptual project for the renovation, refurbishment, and expansion of the building. They contacted us to prepare a critical analysis focusing on the acoustics and soundproofing aspects.
After reviewing the documentation, we compared it with the actual conditions on-site. Acoustic measurements were carried out to assess sound levels and reverberation throughout Terminal 2, covering all public areas in both the landside and airside sections. Multiple measurement points were taken in designated zones such as arrival and departure halls, security checkpoints, baggage claim areas, cafés, shops, and individual gates. Outside the terminal, we also measured locations where noise was generated by vehicle traffic.
The measurements were taken under varying levels of activity to compare sound levels during periods of low traffic with those during peak flight operations.
Measurements in the security checkpoint area showed that during peak flight periods, sound levels were noticeably higher. Additional noise assessments were conducted on the apron at several points. The highest noise sources were identified as parked aircraft with their climate control system engines running.
